Film Festival Fashion

With the beginning of the Cannes Film Festival the stars are out in force and are dressed to impress (well most of them).
Ugg. This is bad. Julianne Moore has made a rubbish attempt at red carpet glamour. The feathers, the flowers, the jewels, the draping, it's just all too much! The dress is from Christian Lacroix spring '08 couture collection and to be honest I hate it!

Cate Blanchett shows off post baby body in Giorgio Armani Prive silk organza gown, and she looks goood! Armani is said to be dressing Cate all throughout the festival so expect more gorgeous gowns!

Eva Longoria shines in turquoise chiffon Versace floor length dress.

Mishca looks good considering her recent fashion antics, but I'm still not completely sold!

Natalie Portman looks polished in purple Lanvin and black accessories- my favourite so far!

Last night saw the stars of Sex and the City come out in fashion force to attend the movie premier in London. It wouldn't be right if there weren't some quirky fashion statements going on, especially SJP's interesting Philip Treacy headpiece! SJP was also wearing Alexander McQueen, whilst Kim Cattrall kept it British in Vivienne Westwood, Cynthia Nixon wore Calvin Klein, and Kirstin Davis went vintage. Britain's Next Top Model returns!

It's here! The new season of Britain's Next Top Model is set to be yet another 'ultra bitchy, uber glamorous' exciting series.
I already have my favourite, Leanne (pictured on the left), and she seems the most down to earth and genuine. I'm always surprised by the positive body images on this show- most of the models look healthy and are definitely not stick thin!

Stefanie Wilson (pictured below left), has already emerged to be the bitch of the group, with her over-confidence and nagging ways. She has also been picked out by the judges as not being a model type; it will be interesting to see how long she lasts!

One thing that intrigued me was the introduction of the new judge, Huggy Ragnarsson, ex-model and photographer. She looks like a bag of bones with inflated lips! How you could take advice of anyone who wants to look like that I don't know! She's not exactly a positive image for the girls to be aspiring to.

Size 16 beauty queen Chloe Marshall has been under attack this week from former Miss England judge and nutritionist, Monica Grenfell, for being a bad role model for today's women. She has even gone so far as to say that Chloe is fat. Looking at her, yes you can see she is on the larger side, but fat wouldn't be the word I would use. At 5ft 10" it is understandable that it would be unrealistic for her to be a size 8.

She is the average size for British women, just because she is a size 16 doesn't necessarily mean she is lazy and doomed for a life towards diabetes. The girls Grenfell refers to as walking around with their muffin tops hanging out are hardly the type of girls to care about who is the latest beauty queen. They will be the ones who have no regard for their weight and are in my eyes unlikely to be affected by the presence of Chloe in the media.

It is the girls who are healthy, although naturally bigger who will gain confidence from Chloe. There are so many skinny role models, what harm is one plus size role model going to cause? After all sex symbol Marylin Monroe was said to peak at a size 16, where are there claims that she was a bad role model? With the current worries towards obesity and anorexia, the media should be focusing on being healthy, not your dress size.

X-Factor has always been given a bad name by critics with claims that it just produces manufactured pop that will flop. Well Leona Lewis certainly has proved them wrong, winner of the 2006 X-Factor she is said to have 'made the leap to international pop star'.

Leona is now the first British female singer to get a number one in the US record charts for twenty years!

Many dubbed Leona a one hit wonder when she released Bleeding Love, but this proves that it doesn't matter if she was found on X-Factor or not, she is a star.

Celebrities are often seen as something which adolescents strive to be like creating their own sub-cultures and realities in order to achieve their dreams.

This leads to me ask, why is this so harmful? As long as the celebrity they are striving to be like is not a bad role model (e.g. Britney!) I don't see there is a problem.

There needs to be more girls out there who want to be like Leona, breaking the USA and using her status to help children in South Africa. I wonder when the media will find something wrong with Leona? Well hopefully not!
